Development Log - Week06
This week, most of our attention went to giving the submarine a new look. We threw away the placeholder we had been using up until now and created an actual version in the style of our game. First of all, we decided that our original design was a bit too claustrophobic, which says a lot for a game about submarines, so we decided to give the whole thing some extra height. We also added some of the interior to all of the rooms. Each of them have an unique background covered with pipes and machines, to give that cluttered submarine feel. They all have a damaged stage as well, for when the submarine gets hit. Furthermore, we added some firepower to the ship in the form of a large gun or two, controlable from the seats next to it. We also added ladders that can be used to go from one floor to the other.
Another thing you can see in this picture is that we added a simple HUD. Around the icons for each player, there is a circle for health an oxygen. Now when the Diver is outside and dying, you can actually see his oxygen going down first and then his health when he starts drowning. Later on we will make probably make the HUD smaller and add some extra information to it, like items and the sonar, but for now this is all we need!
Speaking of drowning, we added a couple of new animations for the existing characters, most involving their death. Furthermore, Gunner and Captain have been added as well, with all of the existing animations add their exposal. With neither of them having a tool they need for a specific animation, such as Diver's harpoon or Engi's wrench, but these animations still available to them, I decided to give them both something that would suit their character just to see these in action, hench a knife for Gunner and a bottle of booze for Captain.
Next week, it's time to add something for the crew to fight. We already have a silly shark in our scene, but there is not much he is doing right now. Additionally, we are planning to add all kinds of sea creatures to withstand, like puffers and jellyfish. We also want to add some resources like metal and treasure for the Diver to collect.
